How Did We Survive?

My uncle sent me this and i had to pass it on, makes you wonder:

® My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

® My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes too, our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting ecoli.

® Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

® The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

® We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

® Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.

® Every year, someone taught the whole school a lesson [and provided comic relief] by running in the halls with leather soles on linoleum tile and hitting the wet spot. How much better off would we be today if we only knew we could have sued the school system.

® Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention. We must have had horribly damaged psyches.

® I can't understand it. Schools didn't offer 14 year olds an abortion or condoms (we wouldn't have known what either was anyway)

® What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.

® I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

® I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

® I must be repressing that memory as I try to rationalize through the denial of the dangers could have befallen us as we trekked off each day about a mile down the road to some guy's vacant lot, built forts out of branches and pieces of plywood, made trails, and fought over who got to be the Lone Ranger. What was that property owner thinking, letting us play on that lot? He should have been locked up for not putting up a fence around the property, complete with a self-closing gate and an infrared intruder alarm.

® Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

® We played king of the hill on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48 cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

® We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked (physical abuse) there too and then we got butt spanked again when we got home.

® Mom invited the door to door salesman inside for coffee, kids choked down the dust from the gravel driveway while playing with Tonka trucks (Remember why Tonka trucks were made tough .. it wasn't so that they could take the rough Berber in the family room), and Dad drove a car with leaded gas.

® Our music had to be left inside when we went out to play and I am sure that I nearly exhausted my imagination a couple of times when we went on two week vacations. I should probably sue the folks now for the danger they put us in when we all slept in campgrounds in the family tent.

® Summers were spent behind the push lawn mower and I didn't even know that mowers came with motors until I was 13 and we got one without an automatic blade-stop or an auto-drive. How sick were my parents? Of course my parents weren't the only psychos. I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

® To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that? We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes!

® We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

® LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA!

addiction

My husband thinks I am getting addicted to my computer.  NOT I have just found that it can be for more than fun and playing.  What I really got it for was to write my book. I really need to get serious about doing that.  I have had about a month off from working and I still haven't gotten around to working on it much.  I know exactly what I want to write about it is just making myself sit down and start it.  I have many ideas for a couple of books.  Where would the great writers be like Danielle Steelle and Fern Michaels if they procrastinated like me.  Oh here I go again.  I have enjoyed reading everyones journals though and have laughed and cried.  I will just have to limit myself to an hour a day or something.  Wish me luck on my writing...I need it.

The darn hives came back to visit me last night.  I thought I was home free when they didn't show up until midnight.  I guess they were out having a party.  I made homemade chili and bread last night for supper and my husband and I stayed up late singing karaoke together and it got too late to eat.  Guess what we are having for lunch today?  We had fun though.  He really likes the band Rascal Flatts.  Me too.

Today I am going to try to get some stuff done around the house.  I only have one more day before I get busy training for my new job.  I hope it all goes easily for me traveling to San Antonio to learn how to become a cashier.  I mean I have already been dealing with money for over 15 years.  The first class is company orientation.  It is a four hour class...how much orientation does a person need to run a cash register?  The second class on Tues is for learning how to sack grocerys.  This one is two hours long.  Whew.  That's alot of grocerys I guess.  Tues class starts at 5-9 for first class and 9-11 for second class.  6 hours of training.  I probably won't get home until after midnight.  Oh well maybe it will be fun.

The one thing that I am not going to like is that on Thurs I have to miss my favorite show Survivor.  I hope I can figure out how to tape it.  My VCR has been acting up.  When I put my application in I said I could work from open to close everyday but Thurs  When they asked me why I was honest with them and told them about my Survivor addiction.  They just laughed at me "This is serious People"

Oh well I guess I will "survive"

Have a great day everyone out there in J land.  Catch you later, Barbara

Morning Has Broken

Hi again it's just me

Well now I will get back to telling you about me.  I am 44 years old and actually an ex waitress.  I loved that job but the manager was .....well let's be kind and let God deal with her.  Anyway.  I have been married for 24 years to Rick who most of the time is a great guy, they all have their moments don't they lol.  I have a son who is 21 years old and living in Austin.  He just graduated from chef school.  He is a chef at a country club in Georgetown now.  We live in Lytle a small town 30 miles south of San Antonio. I am new at this picture thing so when I get it all figured out I will send more.  I am so blessed to have all my family and friends.  I thank God for each and every one of you.  I grew up in a family of three girls and a preacher for a Daddy and a coach for a Mom.  My little sister as you have read died of lung cancer when she was just 35 years old.  I miss her so much. She was my best friend.  Her children were 6 and 7.Now 9 and 10.  They are doing fine but miss their mom like me.  Okay let's don't be sad because she is in Heaven now and we are still here.  Who is the lucky one?  I hope to continue to write my thoughts as much as I can so that one day I can look back on this chapter of my life and remember.; I hope that if anyone reads this that I will make you laugh and also know my heart.

Let me tell you about my son Eric.  He is the best son a mom could ask for.  He is kind and sweet and enjoys life.  When he wants something he simply goes for it.  No is not in his vocabulary.  I am so proud of him and all he has accomplished for far.  He grew up in a small town and left for the big city and did everything himself (with a little help from mom and dad) He has his own apartment.  He drives a 67 Buick Special which I have sent in to pimp my ride.  Keeping fingers crossed.  I will write more later,,,just to get you started.
