Barbara, I am so sorry to hear that.  My Dad had it and my 18 year old granddaughter has it.  TMJD can affect not only the jaw muscles but the teeth and ears as well with terrible headaches.  My Dad had the clicking of the jaw when he ate very loudly, too.  Barb, you will be in my prayers.  I pray he is wrong.
I am not trying to minimize your situationm by no means.  I know the pain and aggravation it causes, trust me.  But let us thank, God it is not life threatening.
Please, keep my posted, Barbara.  Hugging you.

Love ,
Fay

Do you mean TMJD?   Lots of people have TMJ...I have had intermentent TMJ pain at different stages in my life.  Mine is usually brought on by stress and me clenching my jaws without realizing it.  Did he mention getting a mouth guard, splint or bite plate?  Mine does WONDERS when I am having pain I just start wearing it again.   TMJ isn't anything to be worried too much about.  Yes it can cause pain and be a bother but there are much worse things that a person could have.  It usually will disapear on it's own.  There are things you can do on your own to help.  Warm packs on your jaw, motrin, eat soft food...avoid things like bagles or gum that make your jaw work too hard, try not to over extend your mouth too much (like when you are yelling at Rick. lol)

Let me know what you end up doing for it.  If you have any questions I might be able to help you...10 years working as a dental assistant we saw lots of cases of TMJD, the really bad ones we referred to a specialist but most cases we handled in the office, including my own.
