Do A Load Of Laundry and Kiss Your Washer

Never thought of a "washer" in this light before..what a blessing!

' Washing Clothes Recipe' -- imagine having a recipe for this ! ! !<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />
Years ago an <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe:

This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook - with spelling errors and all.

WASHING CLOTHES

Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.

Sort things, make 3 piles
1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.
To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.

Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.

Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.

Hang old rags on fence.

Spread tea towels on grass.

Pore wrench water in flower bed. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. Turn tubs upside down.

Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.
================================================
Paste this over your washer and dryer Next time when you think things are bleak, read it again, kiss that washing machine and
dryer, and give thanks. First thing each morning you should run and hug your washer and dryer, also your toilet---those two-holers used to get mighty cold!

For you non-southerners -wrench means rinse.
;)
AND WE THOUGHT WE HAVE IT ROUGH

I am so glad I don't have to do laundry like that.  I have had a time when I didn't have a washing machine and had to go to the laundry mat.  And I've even used a scrub board and washed them in the bathtub.  I hated those days.  And my fingernails came off.  It was harsh.
P.S.  I need information again on how to access your song IN THE GARDEN.  I've lost your screen name.  Also, my account has expired.  You don't know how floored I was when you wrote me that letter.  I was so touched! I haven't been able to hear it tho. : (

I couldn't live without my modern conveniences, I'm convinced of that.  I am old enough to remember my mom having a wringer washing machine and what an all day affair "wash day" was.  Not to mention, being careful NOT to get the wrong things caught in the wringer !!!

I'd be walking around in dirty clothes if we still did things this way.  LOL  Yikes.  Doesn't sound like too much fun! xox

I do my clothes in a plastic tub in my sink.      It is good exercise squeezing the water each cycle.    It takes several rinses to get the soap out.  No lye soap or flour for me though.      I have a clothes line that goes through my living area and one outside and one sheltered in my barn.     I save money cutting my own hair with an electric clipper/scissors also.      I have to have the building built before I will have room for a washer and dryer.    The building is going slow and is taking every dollar I have but it progresses along at a pace that is not too stressful for my back with the help of my worker.    mark

Man I need a maid and someone to go to work for me.  I have paintings to draw and books to write.... kids to take care of... I need more than just a washer and a dryer... need a robot to fold and put it all away too.  LOL.  Hugs,
Lisa

I love it!  I have a 1940's cookbook that begins cooking a chicken with:  "singe the bird over a direct flame to burn off hairs and fuzz..."  LOL  I have actually participated in that ritual.   -  Barbara
