I Stick Out Like A sore Thumb

Barbara...I need to talk to you a minute.

This was said by one of my managers today.

Ok...which by the way is Mr. Kiss Butt.....from previous entry.

Anyway...

MKB:  I think that our cashiers are not showing the true spirit that I would like to project to the customers.

Me:  And what is that?

MKB:  Well take a look down the line and tell me how many you see that are smiling.

Me...looking down the line and noticing everyone working their hardest but concentrating and not one single one was talking to the customer or smiling... so being honest I said..None

MKB:  I think we are sending a negative attitude towards our customers.

Me:  Well...all I know is that I do talk to my customers and I smile at each and everyone of them, because that is the way I was raised.  Even if someone scowls at me I will smile and I usually get one back.

MKB:  That is exactly what I am talking about

Me: Ok, so you know that I do smile right?

MKB: Oh yes, I have been watching you and you are really good with the little kids too.  You always ask them about school, or how old they are or anything..and you make sure to include them

Me:  Well, that is just the way I am I guess...never meet a stranger.

MKB:  And I have seen people come through your line in a bad mood and by the time they leave are in a better one.

Me:  Well I tend to joke around with them a bit

MKB:  That is exactly what I am trying to say

Me:  What?

MKB:  You are the only one who does this

Me: Ok is there anything else?

MKB:  Yes...when you do this you stick out like a sore thumb.

Me:  Is that a problem?

MKB:  No, but how can I get the rest of them to do this?

Me:  I don't know, I just try to do it myself.

MKB:  Ok, well I think instead of you getting back on the register I would like you to clean the registers that aren't being used.

Me...thinking to myself...if I am the only one (according to him) that is being friendly...why is it that he is taking me off the registers and having me clean?

I am confused.

It's back to that old adage, no good deed goes unpunished.  That makes no sense at all.  Give me the phone number to the store and I'll call the mgr. and say I got in your line and how great it was to be served by someone so pleasant.  I don't get his logic.  Why 'punish' you for a good job?  He's an idiot.

I think Mr KB was just anxious for a chat... That was a non-conversation if ever I saw one. From HIS part, not yours.

It's the same all over.....it seems that most in a manager type position are verrrry strange indeed !  Linda in Washington

This is quite interesting, Mr. KB takes you off a register and makes you clean them becasue he as a manager is incapable of getting his Staff to be the way he perceives a waitress to be.  So he take his only waitress that can be that way and removes her from the public.  You see this KB cant manage, or he would have had a little meeting with the others and imparted his feelings to them.  So instead, because of his ineptness he had to remove the "sore thumb" because u do stand out as what a waitress should be and he ass a kiss butt and no managment skills cant get the others to do it he does not know how.  So if the customers cant see you being so kind  then all is  a ok because then everyone is like that  actually his weird way of thinking but it exonerates him from blame in some way i would think. If there is another boss  over him or an owner I would have a talk with him if he continues to treat u in ways that are degrading.

Hey Barb it's nothing really - so he doesn't think as you do, so what?  So he doesn't see the obvious, big deal.  It's your life, you're in charge of your "happiness dept", no one else!  Had a big smile reading it, though lol thanks for the laffs!  xoxo Stay sweet!  CATHY

Hi Barbara..

I've seen your comments on others journals and decided that I would venture over and say "hello!"  So glad I did.  I love your journal, and will surely be coming back.

geesh whiz!!! I can't believe this man. He actually seemed to be reproving you for being nice and smiling and friendly. Geesh!

you keep smiling and being pleasant when you are working that cash register. Curious, how many other cashiers are Christ followers? Your light is shining; you just keep it shining

lol Maybe he was tring to give you a break off the registers by getting you to clean them or something??? lol
Either way...he should call a meeting and talk to all the cashiers..maybe give them a pep talk about being upbeat!!!

he's punishing you by being friendly. LOL. Well instead of having you clean he should tell the other's to smile a little bit more. He should give you a raise. LOL. Now that would be nice. You are a sweet person. Love ya.
